Drawing to a close Friday morning, Europe's largest web hosting conference, WebhostingDay 2009 (www.webhostingday.com) drew many of the top professionals in web hosting to Germany from March 18 to 20.
Having registered more than 2,500 visitors from 21 nations, the fifth annual WebhostingDay surpassed all prior attendance records, according to event organizers at intergenia (www.intergenia.de), meeting the attendee limit for the amusement park that hosted the event, Phantasialand, located near Brühl.
Best described as an irreverent showcase of world cultures and time periods, Phantasialand features a variety of "lands" including Africa, the Wild West, Old Mexico, and China Town, which is apparently the largest collection of Chinese constructions outside China. Phantasialand provided a surreal backdrop to networking events and information sessions. As an added bonus, a couple of rides were opened during lunch breaks and in the evenings.
According to attendance measures, this year's event expanded by roughly 150 percent from last year's, with more than 50 companies contributing with talks and exhibits. The exhibition floor was full and lively, and according to several exhibitors, intergenia deserves a great deal of credit for helping facilitate setup and knockdown, as well as dealing with shipping and other concerns. This kinds of hands-on handling and organization will hopefully make its way to other conference floors.
